Speaker Series 2026 Program

Seeds of Knowledge: Growing Smarter & Greener

The Ottawa Horticultural Society is pleased to present its 2026 Speaker Series under the inspiring theme “Seeds of Knowledge: Growing Smarter and Greener.” This year’s program brings together an exceptional lineup of community leaders, organic growers, environmentalists, master gardeners, and business owners who will share their expertise and passion for cultivating a more resilient and sustainable future.

Over the course of the year, members and guests will explore a wide range of timely and practical topics. Sessions will tackle the pressing challenge of invasive species, offering strategies for early detection, prevention, and control to protect local ecosystems. Organic gardening experts will highlight soil-building practices, natural pest management, and innovative techniques that work in harmony with nature. Recognizing the urgent need to address food insecurity, speakers will also showcase creative approaches to growing fresh, healthy food in urban and rural settings, with a focus on community gardens and local partnerships.

Protecting Canada’s biosecurity is another critical theme, with a presentation examining how gardeners and growers can help safeguard native species and agricultural resources against emerging threats and how Canada is fulfilling an important role to keep these hazards under control. Complementing these sessions, designers and ecological planners will inspire us with ideas for “designing with nature,” demonstrating how landscapes can be both beautiful and functional, while supporting biodiversity and climate resilience.

The 2026 series reflects the Society’s commitment to lifelong learning and community engagement. By gathering diverse voices, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in today’s horticultural world. Whether you are a seasoned gardener, an aspiring grower, or someone who simply cares about a greener future, this year’s series will plant new ideas, spark meaningful conversations, and help us all grow a little smarter and greener together.

Effective September 23rd, 2025, all in-person presentations will be held at St. Mark’s church, 1606 Fisher Avenue, Ottawa. Free parking available behind the church.

January 27, 2026 – Combating Invasive Plants: Tracking the Phragmites in Ontario

Online Presentation

Presenter: Matt Bolding
Ecologist and GIS Professional, Invasive Species Program Coordinator, Ducks Unlimited Canada (Eastern Region)

Invasive Phragmites australis is an invasive grass that has had a devastating impact on the environment in Ontario and continues to cause a serious impact on both our natural ecosystems and on our human infrastructure. Phragmites management is costly and requires several years of effort, both in management and monitoring for the potential re-invasion of Phragmites into previously managed areas. A new tool for use in Phragmites management, biological control, was approved for release in Canada in 2019 following two decades of research. This presentation will speak to how the biological control agent functions, and the status of the efforts to integrate biological control into our existing Phragmites management toolkit.

Matt Bolding has been involved in wetland research for over a decade, working across Canada in many different habitats, including the Prairie Pothole Region, Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. He has led numerous research projects in Ontario dealing with invasive species management, species at risk, and coastal wetland restoration in the marshes of Long Point and Rondeau, on Lake Erie. Matt started at Ducks Unlimited Canada in August 2023 and coordinates Ontario’s invasive species program, which includes supporting research into biological control for invasive Phragmites, the development of new tools to track aquatic invasive European water chestnut and water soldier and coordinating collaborative Phragmites management in Eastern Ontario for the Ontario Phragmites Action Program.
