Celebrate Ottawa’s 200th - Create a Miniature Garden Contest:

A miniature garden is a wonderful way to introduce children to plants. No matter if it is a fairy garden, a dinosaur garden, or a themed storybook garden, this project sparks fun and creativity. You decide the theme - it could be set at the seaside, in the woods, at a farm, on safari or a seasonal theme. There are so many kinds of themed miniature gardens for people of all ages to enjoy, both indoor and outdoor.

In this contest, we are challenging OHS members and families to create a themed miniature-sized garden to be displayed at the OHS booth at the Ottawa 200 Block Party on September 26, 2026 at Marion Dewar Plaza (City Hall).

In addition, we are asking our contestants to bring their gardens to the October OHS meeting to show them to our members.

How to Enter/Contest Guidelines:

  1.   Email your request for an entry form and details (it will be emailed to you). Complete and return it by August 15, 2026.
  2.   You will be provided with a large bonsai pot to be used for your miniature garden, to thank you for your contribution.
  3.   Use your imagination to create a design that will delight and be enjoyed by people of all ages.
  4.   Your garden should include one or more living plants.
  5.   Because of space restrictions, only 12 entries will be accepted for this contest.
  6.   Miniature gardens must be delivered to the OHS booth at Marion Dewar Plaza (City Hall) no later than 9 a.m. on September 26, 2026.
  7.   Arrangements will need to be made for pickup at the end of the day.

Awards:

There are three categories:

  1.   Catching the Spirit of Imagination
  2.   Most Nature-Friendly design
  3.   Most Decorative and Delightful

There will be a People’s Choice Award and an Expert Panel Award in each category. First, second and third place awards will be provided.

Ribbons for each category will be awarded to the winners. A beautiful OHS card set will be awarded to first-in-class winners. Photos of the winners will be displayed in the OHS Yearbook.
