OHS Members and All:  Introducing the first ever Ontario Tree Pageant, by Tree Trust Canada

The following information was shared by our very own OHS Member Connie Munro and from a recent event announcement by Lia McGinnis, Event and Media Coordinator of the Garden Ontario Society.

“As a dedicated member of the Ottawa Horticultural Society (OHS) and an enthusiastic home gardener in Ottawa, I have greatly benefited from my membership. The OHS offers a wealth of resources and activities, including informative meetings, plant sales, garden tours, and a valuable newsletter. Each communication from the OHS brings something of interest and value.

Introducing Tree Trust and the Tree of the Year Pageant

I would like to introduce you to Tree Trust, a small environmental NGO based in Elora, Ontario. Tree Trust is dedicated to educating the public across Ontario about the environmental importance of our large, mature (heritage) trees and how to maintain their health for future generations.

Tree Trust engages the community through various initiatives, one of which is the annual Tree of the Year Tree Pageant. This event allows anyone to nominate a tree that holds special significance to them. Nominations are not limited to heritage trees; even saplings can be nominated. The attached poster and the Tree Trust website provide further details about this exciting and valuable contest. Please note that the deadline for nominations is September 2nd.

Expanding the Event to Ottawa

This event has traditionally been held in southern Ontario, but Tree Trust is eager to include Ottawa this year. We are seeking your support in promoting this event to OHS members over the next few weeks. Potential promotional methods include an email to members, a notice with the poster on our website, and/or a mention in the newsletter, if the schedule permits.” – Connie Munro
