As many of you are aware, the Horticultural Programs at Algonquin are facing elimination. The College’s Board of Governors’ decision meeting on the cuts was to have been held on February 23, 2026. This has been deferred pending a reassessment by the College of the impact of additional funding being provided by the Ontario Government.

The OHS Board is concerned with the impact such cuts would have on a variety of horticultural activities and programs in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. It is recognized that Algonquin College is facing substantive financial pressures, and we remain hopeful that the announced additional funding will alleviate the need to consider cuts to the horticultural programs. However, there is no certainty on this. It may be helpful to comment on cuts to horticultural programs now, while the College deliberates possible changes to the recommendations on program cuts. As a member of the OHS, if you believe in the value of having Algonquin College horticultural programs that support the needs of our area, the Board encourages you to email Algonquin leadership and decision-makers to respectfully ask that they reconsider termination of the programs.

The OHS Board has provided an email template [here] that may be useful -feel free to use it as-is or with modifications as you see fit, should you wish to add your voice to those who are concerned.
